A Good Day for Zayden

Today was a much better day compared to the rollercoaster we've been on this past week. Zayden had three doctor visits today. First up, a refit for his AFOs. Then, a quick check-in with his GI doctor. Finally, he saw his pediatrician for a checkup and vaccinations. We decided to hold off on the chickenpox vaccine for now, mainly because of the family history—turns out his mom, grandma, and even one of his uncles didn’t react well to it. So, we’re waiting until he’s 18 months old, giving his lungs a little more time to grow and strengthen.

We’ve got some concerns about what's going on with the right side of Zayden’s rib cage. The lower six ribs seem to have detached from the sternum or cartilage and are shorter than the ones on his left. Those ribs are supposed to help protect important stuff like the heart, lungs, and liver, so yeah, it’s a bit worrying. X-rays were taken, but they didn’t give us a clear picture of what’s going on. On top of that, Zayden’s height and weight are starting to dip a bit on his growth chart, which is another thing we’re keeping a close eye on.

I’m planning to call his nutritionist tomorrow to talk this through. At his last appointment, I raised concerns this might happen when his calorie intake was reduced, but the plan was to tweak things if it did. It’s probably because Zayden’s getting more active now, burning off calories faster than he’s taking them in. A total shift from before when he was gaining weight quickly because he wasn’t moving around as much.

Zayden had his developmental assessment with the pediatrician today, and he did great! As expected with CDM1, there are some delays, mostly in language and gross motor skills like mobility. But his fine motor skills are right on track—he’s nailing things like pinching, picking up, and moving small objects. His eye-tracking skills are also spot on. And let me tell you, this kid’s personality is just shining. Between his big smiles, cuddles, and even his fiery little temper, he’s got all of us rooting for him and constantly amazed by his determination.

We’re so proud of Zayden and his progress. He’s always keeping us on our toes and surprising us in the best ways possible.
